Vancouver is a city of approximately 195,000 in Clark County, Washington, directly across the Columbia River from Portland, Oregon. As the fourth-largest city in Washington and the largest in Southwest Washington, Vancouver combines deep Pacific Northwest history, a revitalized waterfront, and a major employment base with easy access to Portland.
History of Vancouver
Vancouver is the oldest non-Native American settlement in Washington state, founded in 1825 as a Hudson's Bay Company fur-trading post by Dr. John McLoughlin. (It's unrelated to Vancouver, British Columbia, and pre-dates it.) Fort Vancouver was a hub of the Pacific Northwest fur trade and a site of deep historical significance, including for the Oregon Trail. Vancouver became a U.S. Army post after 1846 and has continually grown as a major regional center.
